This portion of pregnancy for me was honestly the most boring. There were practically no appointments (apart from the 20 week ultrasound which I'll be posting about next!), and although you're somewhat out of the woods now that you've emerged from the first twelve weeks, the symptoms for me just continued to be the same. I had no appetite (I had actually lost weight by this point), and I still felt mildly nauseous all day, despite not actually vomiting (yet!).
THE HONEYMOON PERIOD
Most people seem to refer to this stage as the 'honeymoon period', but I couldn't disagree more! In fact, my first trimester symptoms just seemed to carry through and actually get worse during these weeks, although looking back and comparing what the last few weeks of pregnancy felt like these weeks weren't too bad at all. I kept a very simple monthly journal at this stage, and all I can see as glance through those pages is me writing and potentially exaggerating symptoms to make me sound more pregnant than I actually was. I said that "I think I look so much more pregnant!", that my back was "very sore!", and basically that pregnancy felt "10000x times more real this month!". And no, I did not add additional 0's to that number, that's exactly what I had written for the month of November. A bit dramatic.
THE QUICKEST WEEKS OF PREGNANCY
I will also say that this part of the pregnancy really flew by. In that it was still very slow, but felt much faster than the gruelling first trimester where nobody knows and you feel like you're going insane, and much faster than the third trimester where you actually debate how long you can stay in your apartment before you run out of food because you don't want to face the stairs, while simultaneously having thoughts of "I cannot do this anymore this baby NEEDS to come out!)
CRAVINGS AND KICKS (A.K.A FINALLY FEELING PREGNANT)
However some super lovely things begin to happen during this stage of pregnancy. I felt my first kicks which I have to say is 100000% (not exaggerating this time) the best part of being pregnant. Everybody told me "You'll feel flutters", "the best way I can describe it is like butterflies in your stomach!" and all I can say is my baby never 'fluttered'. One day I felt a massive karate kick and she pretty much kicked every day following that. Her kicks were so strong that my husband felt them just ONE day after I had! I was beginning to get nervous that this baby wasn't moving, and although I did feel the kicks later than most, they were huge and I seriously loved them! Another really cool thing was cravings- something I hadn't experienced much of in the first twelve weeks. I thought I had craved soup during the first trimester, but I think that was mainly just because of my many food aversions and lack of appetite. All of a sudden at the start of the second trimester I really craved lemons. Anything sour really. I bought a ton of sour candy (not great for the blood sugar), sour popsicles (again, bad for the blood sugar levels) and finally I realized what I really wanted was pure lemon juice, so I bought bottles of the stuff and added it into my water every time I had a drink. I still have some in the fridge now despite being six weeks post-partum. I couldn't get enough of the stuff, even nearing delivery! It was oddly reassuring to crave something, and it really did make me feel more pregnant, but on the flip side of that I still had food aversions- and those continued until almost the end of the second trimester! (More on that in the next second trimester post!)
